POTTER VALLEY — The Upper Lake Cougars let their offense run wide open in the first half before hitting the brakes in the second half Wednesday during a 59-12 victory over Laytonville in a first-round game at the Potter Valley Tournament.
Upper Lake (3-5) played man-to-man defense in the first quarter while building a 24-2 lead.
“We played zone the rest of the night,” Upper Lake coach Don Meri said.
Ahead 41-6 at halftime, the Cougars emptied their bench and did everything they could to keep the game from getting any more out of hand in the second half.
“I wouldn”t let them take a shot until we ran all the way through the offense,” Meri said. “We just did what we could.”
An official thanked Meri following the game for not running it up.
“I wouldn”t want it done to me and I”m not going to do it to anyone else,” Meri said.
Taryn Re and Felicia Valdez had 12 points apiece for the Cougars, who play Point Arena today at 4 p.m. Yessica Ayala added 11 points and Rebecca Swaney had 10.
