LOWER LAKE — Scoring 1,000 points in a high school career is a notable achievement. Few players, even three-year varsity veterans such as Clear Lake”s Ryan Richardson, often fall short of the milestone.

Richardson won”t have to worry about missing out. He”ll reach 1,000 later this week during the Hoop Classic, a first for the tournament since its inception in December of 1994. When he does, either against Lower Lake on Thursday or Upper Lake on Friday, he”ll become the 36th Lake County player to reach the milestone and the seventh from Clear Lake. Former Upper Lake star Laura Wilder holds the Lake County record with 1,897. The all-time boys” mark is 1,717 by the head coach of the Kelseyville Knights, none other than Scott Conrad.

And the winner is …

Lower Lake”s Marty Udy won the varsity coach 3-point shoot on Tuesday, sinking 20 treys in 60 seconds. Runner-up honors went to Clear Lake”s GlennWienke with seven. Middletown”s Mike Mullin and Kelseyville”s Rich Facey (filling in for Scott Conrad) also competed.

Udy received a basket full of Christmas treats, both the edible and drinkable variety, for his marksmanship.

Varsity and JV players take their turns at the 3-point and free-throw contests on Friday.

17th annual Hoop Classic

The tournament relocates to Clear Lake High in Lakeport next December. The host school for the 2011 tournament has not been determined.

Off to good start

Defending Hoop Classic JV champion Middletown routed Upper Lake 83-32 in its opener Monday behind 17 points from Nick Delia and 16 from Ben Steinberg. Middletown”s JVs have never won back-to-back Hoop championships.

K”ville sighting

Kelseyville”s cheerleaders attended the Hoop Classic on Monday night, the first Kelseyville cheerleader sighting at the tournament in a number of years.

An award for the top cheerleading squad will be presented Saturday night.

n Didn”t last long

Middletown broke the single-game Hoop Classic scoring record in the JV division on Monday with 83 points against Upper Lake. That broke the record of 80 points set by last season”s Middletown JV squad.
