CLOVERDALE — Sophomore Katherine Edmonds scored 11 points and Taryn Re added eight as the Upper Lake Cougars inched closer to the .500 mark for the season by beating Potter Valley 40-28 in the first round of the Cloverdale Tournament for varsity girls” basketball teams in Cloverdale.

The difference in the game was a 12-3 second quarter by the Cougars, who went into halftime with a 24-13 lead.

“There were no big runs, just slow, steady play,” Upper Lake coach Don Meri said. “We”re getting better. It looks like we”re starting to gel a little bit as a team. Hopefully we keep moving forward.”

Rebecca Swaney, Felicia Valdez and Ashley Arroyo had six points apiece as the Cougars improved to 5-6 overall. They”ll play the winner of Thursday”s first-round game between St. Elizabeth and Sonoma Academy tonight at 7 p.m. in the winner”s semifinal round.

In other girls” tournament action Thursday:

Eureka 58, Lower Lake 51

At Eureka, the Lower Lake Trojans trailed by seven points after one quarter and played Eureka even the rest of the way in a 58-51 first-round loss at the McKinleyville Tournament.

The Trojans (8-3) play either Hoopa or Willits in the consolation semifinals today at 4 p.m.

Four players scored in double figures and accounted for all of the Trojans” points. Veronica Wilder and Jonesha Beasley led the way with 14 points each, April White added 13 and Tashee Denson had 10.

Lower Lake closed to 25-23 by halftime and trailed by only four points entering the fourth quarter.
