Kelseyville comedian featured on Showtime

LAKE COUNTY — Lake County native Marc Yaffee (trailoflaughs.com) joins six other American Indian comedians on an original Showtime special, “Goin” Native, the American Indian Comedy Slam, ?No Reservations Required.”” The show is being broadcast at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT on New Year”s Eve, tonight, with additional airings throughout January. Yaffee, a Kelseyille resident, has toured professionally since 1999. A co-star of the Pow Wow Comedy Jam, Yaffee is a former writer for the late George Carlin”s laugh.com and he has performed overseas five times entertaining U.S. troops. Yaffee”s previous television credits include “Comics Unleashed” with Byron Allen, “The Latino Laugh Festival” and the PBS documentary, “Crossing the Line.”

First Friday Fling at the Main Street Gallery

LAKEPORT — The Main Street Gallery, located at 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport, has a “happening event” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every first Friday of the month.

At least four new artists are featured each month, with 10 or more artists continuing in the show with their work in oil, pastel, photography, metal sculpture, wood, jewelry and more.

One-day abstract painting workshop at LCAC

LAKEPORT — The Lake County Arts Council will offer a one-day abstract painting workshop from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Main Street Gallery, located at 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport.

The workshop will be led by John Eells and participants will complete one 18-inch x 24-inch colorful, acrylic abstract painting, in the course of the day. Cost of the workshop will be $35 per person plus some materials.

The workshop will be limited to seven participants so that individual attention can be given. A signup sheet and a list of materials will be placed in the Main Street Gallery. According to Eells, participants will approach the workshop in a spirit of relaxation and play. For more information, please call 263-6658.

Do you want to be the next poet laureate?

LAKE COUNTY — Lake County Poet Laureate Mary McMillan is accepting applications for Lake County Poet Laureate 2010-2012.

Any Lake County resident can apply for the position or nominate someone they think would do a good job. Here is how to apply:

1. Collect up to eight of your original poems (10 pages maximum).

2. Ask another poet to write a letter of recommendation for you.

3. Write a statement describing how you have served Lake County”s literary community in the past, and how you”d like to serve the community as Poet Laureate.

4. If any of your poems have been published, list their titles and the names of the publications and dates they were published.

Send five copies of each of these items in one package to Mary McMillan, P.O. Box 1236, Kelseyville, CA 95451. Send your application before Jan. 15, 2010.

If you don”t want to apply for the position yourself, you may nominate someone. Just send a letter or e-mail with the person”s name, address phone number and a short statement about why you are nominating them. Poetry Out Loud recitation contest for teens

LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Arts Council is participating again in Poetry Out Loud (POL), a national recitation contest sponsored through a partnership with the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and state and jurisdictional arts agencies of the United States.

Kids 4 Broadway holds auditions on Jan. 7

KELSEYVILLE — Kids 4 Broadway will be holding auditions for Lake County youths ages 7 to 15 on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, for a mystery/thriller play called “Ghost at Goat Rock.” Rehearsals will be held every Monday afternoon (after school) in Kelseyville with performances scheduled for early April 2010 in Lower Lake.

A teenage sister and brother find an old row boat on the beaches of Goat Rock and play a prank on their younger siblings, pretending to be the Ghost of Fisherman Brown.
