HEALDSBURG — Middletown held a one-point lead at halftime before the Healdsburg Greyhounds surged to life in the second half and beat the Mustangs 59-41 in non-league varsity boys” basketball action on Wednesday night in Healdsburg.

The Greyhounds took control of the game with a 23-11 third quarter and ended up outscoring the Mustangs 41-22 in the second half.

“We played one half of basketball, basically,” Middletown coach Mike Mullin said of his team”s first action since winning the 16th annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic on Dec. 19 in Lower Lake. “We took a week off and we ran out of gas in the second half. Lots of mental errors and lots of mistakes.”

Hoop Classic MVP John Hays scored 13 points to pace Middletown (6-5) and John-Wesley Davis added nine points. Jacob Anderson had six.

Middletown also lost to Healdsburg 63-34 earlier this month at the St. Helena Tournament.

The Mustangs open their North Central League I interlock schedule on Saturday against NCL I South powerhouse Cloverdale in Cloverdale. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m.

“It doesn”t get any easier,” Mullin said.
