Winter Music Fest applications due Thursday
LAKEPORT — The Lake County Arts Council is hosting auditions on Jan. 16 for the 17th annual Winter Music Fest. Applications are available at the Main Street Gallery, 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport, or at www.lakecountyartscouncil.com.
You must return your completed application on Thursday in order for organizers to schedule a time for your audition. For more information, contact the Main Street Gallery at 263-6658. Performances take place Feb. 27 and 28 in the Soper-Reese Community Theatre.
Second Sunday Cinema screens ?The Cove”
CLEARLAKE — “The Cove” is Second Sunday Cinema”s free film for January. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Clearlake United Methodist Church, 14521 Pearl Ave. in Clearlake. The film starts at 6 p.m. For more information, call 279-2957.
Every year, men in Taiji, Japan herd thousands of dolphins (smaller cetaceans) into a tiny cove to kill them to sell for meat. This recently-released film documents the slaughter and the high-tension preparations for filming by a team of determined, good-hearted filmmakers.
“The Cove” is on the short list for an Oscar for best documentary for 2009. Organizers report that this film is quite graphic and is not suitable for children 12 or younger.
Poet laureate applications are due by Jan. 15
LAKE COUNTY — Lake County Poet Laureate Mary McMillan is accepting applications for Lake County Poet Laureate 2010-2012.
Any Lake County resident can apply for the position or nominate someone they think would do a good job. Here is how to apply:
1. Collect up to eight of your original poems (10 pages maximum).
2. Ask another poet to write a letter of recommendation for you.
3. Write a statement describing how you have served Lake County”s literary community in the past, and how you”d like to serve the community as Poet Laureate.
4. If any of your poems have been published, list their titles and the names of the publications and dates they were published.
Send five copies of each of these items in one package to Mary McMillan, P.O. Box 1236, Kelseyville, CA 95451. Send your application before Jan. 15, 2010.
If you don”t want to apply for the position yourself, you may nominate someone. Just send a letter or e-mail with the person”s name, address phone number and a short statement about why you are nominating them. Kids 4 Broadway holding auditions Thursday
KELSEYVILLE — Kids 4 Broadway will hold auditions on Thursday, open to Lake County youths ages 7 to 15, for a mystery/thriller play called “Ghost at Goat Rock.” Rehearsals will be held every Monday afternoon (after school) in Kelseyville with performances scheduled for early April 2010 in Lower Lake. Expressive Motion is hosting dance event
MIDDLETOWN — Expressive Motion dance studio will present two performances of its eighth-year winter dance event, “Back To The Past,” 2 and 7 p.m. Jan. 16 in Middletown.

1940s-style swing dance benefits the USO
LOWER LAKE — Tenae Chiotti Stewart, 16, a high school student is hosting a 1940s swing dance from 7 p.m. to midnight on Jan. 23 at the Brick Hall, located in Lower Lake. The proceeds will benefit the USO, an organization that helps to provide entertainment and many other services to United States troops and their families.
The event will include live swing music by David Neft and friends, a dessert buffet by Chic le Chef of Hidden Valley Lake, a silent auction, a WWII costume contest, a swing dance contest complete with instructions and souvenirs available for purchase. ?Art in Public Places” accepting work on Jan. 21
LAKEPORT — From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. only, on Jan. 21, Lake County Arts Council staff will receive work for its “Art in Public Places” program in the main lobby of the Lake County Courthouse.
Artwork may include oils, acrylics, photographs and mixed media, all of which have been securely prepared for hanging. The program can only accept artwork that can hang.
All works received will be hung in the courthouse as space allows and also Lakeport City Hall on Park Street.
“Art in Public Places” welcome new exhibitors. There is a small fee of $1 per piece to enter your work and there will be a 20-percent commission paid to the Lake County Arts Council by members and 30-percent by non-members should any work be sold. Work may be for sale or just to show. Membership is not required, but the LCAC encourages all those interested to become committed members and financial supporters.

One-day abstract painting workshop at LCAC
LAKEPORT — The Lake County Arts Council will offer a one-day abstract painting workshop from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Main Street Gallery, located at 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport.
The workshop will be led by John Eells and participants will complete one 18-inch by 24-inch colorful, acrylic abstract painting, in the course of the day. Cost of the workshop will be $35 per person plus some materials.
The workshop will be limited to seven participants so that individual attention can be given. A signup sheet and a list of materials will be placed in the Main Street Gallery. According to Eells, participants will approach the workshop in a spirit of relaxation and play. For more information, please call 263-6658.
Poetry Out Loud recitation contest for teens
LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Arts Council is participating again in Poetry Out Loud (POL), a national recitation contest sponsored through a partnership with the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and state and jurisdictional arts agencies of the United States.
