LOWER LAKE — If there”s a lousier match-up for the Lower Lake Trojans than the Ferndale Wildcats, Lower Lake coach Marty Udy doesn”t want to think about it.
“Their size is incredible,” Udy said of the Wildcats after the Trojans fell 70-34 in a non-league varsity boys” basketball contest on Saturday in Lower Lake.
“They had one guy under 6-1 and he was on the bench,” Udy said. “Their size completely negated the things that we typically do. They forced us into an outside game and we weren”t hitting in the first half.”
The bottom line, according to Udy, is that the Trojans never had a chance.
“We were never really in the contest to be honest,” Udy said. “The Willits game the night before took a lot out of us. The energy sure wasn”t there against Ferndale, but it wasn”t the kids” fault.”
Ferndale (14-2) is the top-ranked Division VI team in the North Coast Section, according to Udy.
“That kind of team is our biggest nightmare. Their size affected us on both sides (of the court). It was just a tough match-up for us.”
Ferndale jumped out to a 15-1 lead and held Lower Lake (12-8) without a basket until the 1:55 mark of the first quarter. The Wildcats were up 20-3 by quarter”s end and it just got worse from there. It was 39-10 by halftime.
Cole Salmon led the Wildcats with 21 points and Jon Losa added 14.
Gage Carlson”s 10 points led the Trojans and George Novak added eight. Both players sank a pair of 3-pointers.
Lower Lake completes the first half of its North Central League I North schedule tonight in Middletown. The winner will be in sole possession of first place. Junior varsity begins at 5:30 p.m.
