?Tom Jones” features roles for 24 performers
LAKEPORT ? Lake County Theatre Company and Mendocino College are joining together to produce the award-winning comedy “Tom Jones” by David Rogers, adapted from the 1749 novel by Henry Fielding. Auditions take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lake County Arts Council”s Main Street Gallery, 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport.
Young Tom Jones, foundling and ward of Squire Allworthy, is deeply in love with Sophia and she with him, but her father has arranged for her to marry the squire”s sneaky nephew and heir, young Blifil. The romance is discovered, Tom is banished and Sophia, with her maid, Honour, sets out to find him. They are followed by Sophia”s father, his sister, Squire Allworthy and Blifil. All find madcap adventures on the road to London and meet with many strange characters.
The performance features roles for 13 men and 11 women, with some possible children”s roles as well. No previous acting experience is required. Performances take place June 4, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre in Lakeport.
?Renaissance Affair” at Lower Lake High School
LOWER LAKE ? The Lower Lake High School music department presents “A Renaissance Affair,” 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in the LLHS cafeteria, 9430 Lake St. in Lower Lake.
Attendees will be served a feast that includes a Wassail cup, soup, English roasted turkey, sausage, potatoes and sweets. The evening also includes music, festivities, entertainment and pageantry.
Tickets are $25 per person in advance or $35 at the door. Tickets are available in the school attendance office or call 994-6471, ext. 2779 for reservations. Seating is limited.

Concert fundraiser for KPFZ 88.1 FM
LAKEPORT ? Scottish singer Jim Malcolm will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre, 275 S. Main St. in Lakeport. This is a benefit for radio station KPFZ 88.1 FM.
Tickets are available at Watershed Books in Lakeport and Wild About Books in Clearlake and at the theater box office, open from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursdays.

Search is on for California Senior Poet Laureate
SACRAMENTO ? Entries are now being accepted for regional winners in the 18th annual National Senior Poets Laureate Poetry Competition for American poets age 50 and older. Deadline is June 30.
Winning poems of state senior poets laureate will be named in July. Winners will advance to final rounds of competition, from which the winner of $500 and the 2010 National Senior Poet Laureate title will be announced around Sept. 1.
Dewell H. Byrd, retired school administrator from Eureka, won the 2009 California Senior Poet Laureate Award with his poem “Portrait Day.” Winner of the 2009 National Senior Poet Laureate Award was Patricia Frolander, 66, a rancher from Sundance, Wyo.
Co-sponsors Vera-Jane Goodin Schultz and Wanda Sue Parrott founded the contest, which is administered by Amy Kitchener”s Angels Without Wings Foundation. The 2009 winners can be seen in Golden Words Anthology, along with rules for the 2010 Senior Poets Laureate Contest, at www.amykitchenerfdn.org.
?Creative Expressions” invites your submissions
LAKE COUNTY ? Three local writers are seeking your original poems and stories (under 700 words long) to publish in “Creative Expressions,” a publication that appears each month in the Lake County Record-Bee.
Each issue is edited by three Lake County writers: Sandra Wade, Lourdes Thuesen and Mary McMillan, who will solicit and select the work to be published. If your work is selected, it will appear in the weekend edition of the newspaper.
Poems and stories of any kind or theme are welcome. Please send them to mtmcmillan@mac.com in the body of your email. In the subject line, put “CE Submission.”
