LAKEPORT — Bouncing back from a disappointing two-point loss to Kelseyville a week earlier, the Clear Lake High School wrestling team beat Willits 42-36 and Fort Bragg 48-27 in Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling action on Wednesday evening in Lakeport.
“We were determined to not repeat our loss by two points to the Kelseyville squad last week,” Clear Lake coach Mike Humble said. “And everybody rose to the occasion.”
The Cardinals had a close call against the Wolverines, according to Humble.
“The duel with Willits came down to the wire and had we lost one more match, the whole thing would have gone to Willits.”
Pins accounted for all 42 of the Cardinals” points against the Wolverines. Clear Lake winners were Ryan Blyleven at 114 pounds, Jacob Humble at 127 pounds, Rodney Henson at 142 pounds, Robby Hammers at 154 pounds, Derek Larsen at 173 pounds, Mike Reynolds at 191 pounds and Shawn Larsen at 217 pounds.
Clear Lake had a bigger cushion against Fort Bragg, winning eight of the 14 matches.
For the Cardinals, Blyleven won by pin at 114 pounds, Holt won by pin at 132 pounds, Hammers won by pin at 147 pounds, Matt Lockwood won by pin at 162 pounds and Derek Larsen won by pin at 173 pounds.
Clear Lake (3-1) picked up forfeits at 121, 154 and 191 pounds.
“Overall the squad really pulled together despite suffering several injuries in the last few weeks,” Humble said.
Clear Lake travels to the Marin Catholic Tournament in Kentfield on Saturday. Next Wednesday, the Cardinals hit the road for a CMC meet against Middletown and Point Arena at Point Arena.
