KELSEYVILLE — Locked in a 26-25 battle with St. Helena after one half, the Kelseyville Knights left their game in the locker room and fell 56-35 to the Saints in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” basketball game on Thursday in Kelseyville.
St. Helena, the defending NCL I South champion, outscored Kelseyville 30-10 in the second half, including 14-3 in the third quarter.
“All free throws,” Kelseyville coach Caitlin Andrus said of her team”s third-quarter struggles from the field.
“We stopped ourselves,” Andrus said. “They (Saints) didn”t do anything amazing in the second half on defense. We turned the ball over.”
Kelseyville”s guards also stopped attacking the basket, according to Andrus.
“We need to be going at them more instead of stepping back and being victims,” she said.
Maddy Densberger”s 15 points led the Saints. Kendra Schwegerl”s 12 points paced the Knights (13-9). Schwegerl and teammate and Ashley Mueller fouled out in the fourth quarter.
“That hurts,” Andrus said of the loss of two of her starters.
The game was delayed when officials failed to show up. Two substitute officials worked the varsity game after a single official called the junior varsity game (see game story, Page A9).
Kelseyville travels to Lower Lake tonight in NCL I North action. JV tip-off is 6 p.m.
