KELSEYVILLE — As losses go, they don”t come much tougher than the 50-46 double-overtime setback the Kelseyville Knights endured against the Willits Wolverines on Tuesday during a North Central League I North junior varsity boys” basketball game in Kelseyville.
Kelseyville had the game all but won near the end of the first time overtime period with a two-point lead and the clock about to expire. Then, for reasons unknown to Kelseyville coach Rich Martin, a Knights player fouled a Wolverines player with .3 seconds remaining.
“I told them not to foul,” Martin said.
With the Wolverines in the bonus, the Willits player stepped to the free-throw line and hit both shots to tie the game and force a second overtime period, and the Wolverines went on to win the game.
“It was a tough loss,” Martin said.
James Green”s 23 points paced Kelseyville and David Ladd added 13.
In other JV boys” basketball action Tuesday:
Clear Lake 69, Cloverdale 61
At Lakeport, Steven Edwards erupted for 24 points in the second half and the Clear Lake Cardinals, trailing 20-10 after one quarter, roared back to beat the Cloverdale Eagles in NCL I South action.
“He was on fire in the third and fourth quarters,” Clear Lake coach Jeremy Hopkins said of Edwards, who finished with a team-high 30 points. “It was probably his best game in the flow of the offense. He was pulling up for 12-footers and you just knew it was going in.”
Clear Lake (3-2, 13-9) switched to a man-to-man defense after the first quarter, according to Hopkins.
“I think that was the difference,” he said.
Edwards was among four Clear Lake players to score in double figures. Adrian Perez added 13 points, Omar Vazquez had 12 and Matt Gatton 10.
