This morning “Dr. Oz,” on network TV with a group of teens and their mothers, the Doctor (with a visiting expert, Dr. Jennifer Anniston) dealt with questions about sex, such as “When do you begin talking with your child?” and “Can you get a sexual disease from oral sex?” and “Can you get pregnant from anal sex.” Each question was answered in detail, the mothers and daughters were encouraged to speak up, to participate thoroughly (they did). Backdrop to the show: 750,000 teens were impregnated in the United States last year (highest, by far, in the industrialized world); the cost to the country is 7 billion dollars; more than two-thirds of pregnant teens will not graduate from high school.
