LAKE COUNTY ? Invasive Species Council chairman and University of California adviser, Greg Giusti, will contract with the Department of Fish and Game to expand the quagga mussel prevention program statewide.
“I”ve been the squeaky wheel,” Guisti said. “It”s a brilliant move on the part of the Department of Fish and Game. It”s essential that someone try to coordinate these programs.”
Giusti will coordinate the program from Lakeport.
“Though this will make more work for me, I think it can help our local program in both recognition and hopefully resources,” Giusti said in an e-mail. “Lake County has been one of the leaders in the quagga mussel effort,” he said.
Giusti said the contract will require some limited travel to understand other programs, but he doesn”t expect it to impact his other responsibilities as he recruited people to identify needs and contacts in the state.
“It”s always important to challenge what the paradigms are and capture new and better ideas,” Guisti said.
The University of California and Department of Fish and Game are processing the contract and Giusti expects it to be signed in about a week, he said.
