LAKE COUNTY — On Tuesday a candidate for Lake County Sheriff/Coroner, Marty McCarthy announced that he is withdrawing from the race.

He wrote, “I am withdrawing from the Sheriff”s Race due to a lack of support sufficient enough to continue. I thank all of those who did support me in this very early stage of the election process.” He also stated, “I also thank those who showed courage while experiencing threats, veiled and otherwise. I curse the cowards that gave them.”

McCarthy said he will be returning to the development of his consulting business, coaching youth sports and serving in the church.

In a press release from the Lake County Deputy Sheriff”s Association, it states that the Lake County Deputy Sheriff”s Association (LCDSA) wishes to announce its endorsement of Rodney K. Mitchell in his bid for re-election to the Office of Sheriff.

District Attorney Candidates Jon Hopkins, Doug Rhoades, Don Anderson, as well as Sheriff candidates Rodney Mitchell, Francisco Rivero and Jack Baxter all asked for the endorsement of the LCDSA in their bids for re-election.

The statement says, “The LCDSA has 63 members with voting rights. Over the past week, all members of the DSA were provided the opportunity to cast their vote for any of these candidates, or alternatively to vote for no endorsement, or to remain neutral. The ballots were submitted in a manner that allowed for anonymity of the voting members and the votes were counted by DSA board members on March 1, in accordance with Peace Officer Research Association of California guidelines, a 2/3 vote was required to receive the DSA”s endorsement.

Of 53 ballots that were cast, the final vote count was as follows, for the office of Sheriff: Rodney K. Mitchell got 44 votes, Jack Baxter received three votes, Francisco Rivero got no votes, neutral got one vote and no endorsement got five votes.

For the Office of District Attorney: Jon Hopkins got 18 votes, Doug Rhoades got 16 votes, Don Anderson got three votes, neutral got eight votes and no endorsement got eight votes.

Former Sheriff”s candidate Marty McCarthy did not request consideration for an endorsement from the DSA.

“Due to no District Attorney candidate receiving enough votes for an endorsement, the LCDSA will not be offering an endorsement for any District Attorney candidate at this time,” Brian Martin, board member and public information officer of the Lake County Deputy Sheriff”s Association wrote.
