I was initially in favor of Lowe”s coming to Clearlake as it seemed a sign of progress and growth. But now that I understand that it is costing us, the taxpayers, $7 million it does not seem right. My husband and I have done two major remodeling projects since moving here six years ago and we buy locally when we can but do spend a fair amount at Friedman”s and Home Depot when we need to.
That said, we would much rather see the city spend the $7 million on Lakeshore Drive to improve the appearance and the desirability of the area for tourists as well as entrepreneurs. We need restaurants more than anything! We love to dine out but there is nowhere to go! We need good food whether it is low cost or high end. We need unique stores that tourists will tell their friends about (that also serve the needs of locals). There is so much we need on Lakeshore Drive to enhance the beauty and usability of the lake. But another store that will put Four Corners, Mendo Mill, Kelseyville Lumber and Piedmont Lumber in jeopardy is not what we need! It seems to us that the city could give the airport property to a developer and have him make the necessary accommodations to develop the property in exchange for no more cost to the city thereby freeing up the redevelopment funds for abetter use.
We are an architect and an interior designer who are here to stay … we love it here. We would like to meet with anyone who wants to bat ideas around for the betterment of the town of Clearlake and the lake in general. It is a remarkable resource. We would like to enhance it for the enjoyment of everyone, while keeping it low-key and un-trendy!
