LAKE COUNTY — Rotary Club of Clearlake recently conducted its annual dictionary giveaway in the Konocti Unified School District. On Jan. 26, the third grade classes of Mrs. Felperin, Mrs. Engardio, Mrs. Langdon and Mrs. Mock were presented with their own dictionaries.
“These books came with a label in the book with each individual student”s name,” Linda Mock said. “This is a special gift that is a community service project that the local Rotary Club members participate in each year for the benefit of local schools. Third grade is the selected grade as it is when reference materials begin to become an important tool in a student”s school and personal life.”
Mock said that each third grade student received the most recent edition of MacMillian”s Fully-Illustrated Dictionary for Children. “Each page has one or more detailed illustration of words from that page,” Mock said. “It also includes maps of countries, states and continents as well as information about all of our presidents and planets.”
In addition to the most obvious uses of definitions of words and spelling, Mock said the students will be able to use their books in many academic skills such as guide words, alphabetical order, pronunciation, parts of speech, multiple meanings and other academic areas such as science and social studies.
“Rotary Club members visited the individual classrooms to hand out the new books and to interact with the students,” Mock said. “After they left, it was difficult for the students to do anything but admire their new gifts. After several weeks of classroom instruction in dictionary skills, the students will take their books home to use for many years to come.”
Mock said that students, staff, parents and the community extend a heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club of Clearlake for this generous project and all the other wonderful contributions it makes to the community.
