LAKEPORT — Sophomore Emily Wingler and senior Liz Sanderson combined on a three-hit shutout Wednesday as the Clear Lake Cardinals beat the Middletown Mustangs 10-0 in a non-league softball game in Lakeport.

The contest was called after 4 ? innings because of the 10-run rule.

Wingler, 1-0, allowed all three Middletown hits, struck out one and walked none in four innings. Sanderson finished up with a 1-2-3 fifth, striking out two.

While it wasn”t a flawless performance by the Cardinals (2-0), Clear Lake coach Gary Pickle said his squad played well for the most part.

“We”re making some mistakes you know you”re going to make early,” Pickle said.

Losing pitcher Victoria Allessandra walked the first two batters she faced in the bottom of the first inning and the Cardinals capitalized by scoring three times, including RBI grounders by Mari Jordan and Rylie Gabehart.

Clear Lake added three more runs in the third, two scoring on Vanessa Tullos” triple, for a 6-0 lead. The Cardinals then pushed their lead into double digits with a four-run fourth that included a RBI infield single by freshman Morgan Psalmonds, the first hit and RBI of her high school career.

Jordan (2-for-3) finished the game with two RBIs.

After getting just one hit in each of its first two games this season, the sophomore-dominated Middletown squad under first-year coach Bob Cummesky notched a season-hit three hits against the Cardinals. Kyleen Bouchard, Hannah Williams and Shelby Key all had singles.

“I thought they played pretty solid ball,” Pickle said of the Mustangs (0-3). “They didn”t strike out a lot, they put the ball into play.”

Clear Lake hosts Geyserville today at 3:30 p.m. and hits the road for the first time this season Saturday against Santa Rosa High School at 11 a.m. Middletown visits Santa Rosa High School today and returns home Tuesday to take on Healdsburg. Both games start at 3:30 p.m.
