MIDDLETOWN — Coming off the no-hitter he pitched on Saturday in a 10-0 win over Lower Lake, Clear Lake”s Bryan Edwards struck out 10 in five innings and combined with Ryan Richardson on a four-hitter as the Cardinals beat the Middletown Mustangs 6-2 in a non-league varsity baseball game Thursday at Wes Martin Field.
“He was mixing up his speeds well and hitting his locations,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said of Edwards, a left-hander. “We were pressing, out in front and not staying back.”
Middletown”s Nos. 5-9 hitters struck out nine times in 10 at-bats during the first four innings.
“We gave ourselves no chance,” Tucker said.
Tanner Mansell set the tone for Clear Lake (2-0) by hitting the first pitch of the game to straightaway center field for a home run. Mansell finished the game 3-for-5 and also scored twice. Jess Phillips and Tyler Beets each had two hits and a RBI for the Cardinals.
Lower Lake leadoff hitter Dylan Pastor went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs for Middletown (1-1). Losing pitcher Eric Schenk and John Hays each had a hit and a RBI.
“It was a good to get a wakeup call,” Tucker said. “We need a wakeup call because we have a tough schedule ahead.”
