OMAHA — San Francisco State University senior Steve Franklin, a 2006 Middletown High School graduate, closed out his collegiate career on Saturday with a sixth-place finish in the heavyweight division at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Omaha.
After going 2-1 in Friday”s opening rounds, Franklin beat Christopher Dempsey of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown by first-round fall in consolation bracket action early Saturday. Dustin Finn of the University of Central Oklahoma then derailed Franklin”s drive for third place with a second-round pin.
The loss to Finn dropped Franklin into the fifth-place match against Charlie Alexander of Western State College of Colorado. Alexander prevailed 5-3.
Franklin”s high finish in the heavyweight division earned him All-Am-erican honors. He was 28-12 on the season
As a senior at Middle-town in 2006, Franklin placed fourth in the state in the 215-pound division.
