COBB — Tyler Drake”s round of 82 led a balanced Kelseyville High School effort on Wednesday as the Knights turned back Mercy High School of Redding 420-510 in a non-conference golf match at Adams Springs Golf Course.

Kelseyville”s low five scorers, led by Drake, were tightly packed on a spring-like day on Cobb Mountain.

“It was beautiful,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said of the weather that greeted both teams. “We”ve had snow flurries up here a couple of times this month.”

Esteban Rodriguez of Mercy had the day”s low round, a 76 on the par-68 Adams Springs layout.

For Kelseyville, Wyatt Ferrell and Corey Huber carded rounds of 83 and Brandon Walker and Peter Wotherspoon finished with 86.

“I”m pleased to have five people shooting in the low to mid-80s, that”s a good sign,” Berry said.

Drake carded two birdies during his team-leading round. Huber and Walker had one apiece.

Kelseyville, the reigning Coastal Mountain Conference South champion, begins defense of its title today at Mount St. Helena Golf Course in Calistoga. St. Vincent, last year”s runner-up, is the favorite in 2010, according to Berry.

“St. Vincent returns four starters from a second-place team,” Berry said. “They”re the more experienced team and the more tournament-hardened team.”

The top two finishers in the CMC South advance to the sectional playoffs.

“We need a bunch of guys shooting well to make the playoffs,” Berry said.
