Tuesday, Feb. 16, a gloriously sun-shining day, the air crisp and clean after all the rain.

While driving home on Highway 29 toward the Rivieras, the scenery along our route from Lakeport was magnificent. My daughter and I were traveling (below the speed limit) when suddenly, without warning, all four cars in front of ours came to a screeching halt. The first vehicle evidently decided, at the last minute, to make a left-hand turn into Kelseyville Salvage, obviously without signaling well in advance. Having applied our brakes while viewing the oncoming traffic in the rearview and side view mirrors, we were horrified to see an oncoming Peterbilt 18-wheeler and behind him another tanker, both approaching the rear of our vehicle. We felt immediate doom! As we watched the trucks continue to careen toward us, I knew we would not survive the approaching disaster.

We cannot express enough thanks to the drivers of both trucks who miraculously steered their rigs, one to each shoulder on the sides of the lined up, stopped passenger cars. They saved our lives, and for that we are most grateful. The skid marks are still evident on the pavement in front of the salvage yard.

This is a very dangerous left turn area on the highway and should be controlled by either a traffic light or other lifesaving device. Since the renovation at Kitt”s Corner, many lives have been saved!
