TOMALES — The Tomales Braves broke open a close game with a four-run fifth inning on Thursday and beat the Lower Lake Trojans 9-2 in a non-league varsity baseball contest at Tomales.

“Best total game we”ve played this year,” Lower Lake first-year coach Joe Mattos said of the Trojans” effort. “We hit the ball, we hit the ball really hard a bunch of times, but their shots found gaps and ours went right to people, that was the difference.”

Jesus Fonseca went 2-for-4 with a double and George Novak also went 2-for-4 for the Trojans (0-4).

Losing pitcher Stephen Whitcomb singled home the Trojans” first run in the top of the third inning to knot the score at 1. Tomales pushed back in front with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Lower Lake closed to 4-2 in the top of the fourth on a RBI grounder.

Whitcomb went the distance for Lower Lake, striking out five and walking three.

The Trojans play their third game in as many days today when they host Mendocino.
