After reading Gary Dickson”s editorial on seat belt usage Saturday, March 6, I am inclined to respond by saying this article smacks of typical liberal pap so frequently foisted upon us by persons who believe it is the responsibility of the government to protect us from ourselves.
Although I am aware that seat belts (as well as other safety equipment) save lives, as an adult, I don”t feel that lawmakers of our country should have the right to institute legislation that demands the citizens abide by them so as not to injure themselves. It should not be necessary to tell someone not to look down the barrel of a gun and pull the trigger or spray insect killer down their throat. I, for one, feel that I am intelligent and qualified enough to choose whether or not to wear a seat belt, motorcycle helmet, bicycle helmet etc. while in/on my own vehicle on my own time.
I realize that as an employee of any business, I may be subjected to various safety equipment requirements to protect my employer from liability. But, as a private adult citizen allow me to make the decisions that determine my need to utilize these safety devices based on my intellectual deductions and qualified experience.
By the way, I wear my seat belt because I choose to and wear a helmet on my motorcycle because previous experience has taught me it will save my life. But, it should be my choice.
