LAKEPORT — The Clear Lake Cardinals stole bases and took the extra base whenever the situation presented itself on Tuesday while beating the Kelseyville Knights 11-6 in a non-league varsity baseball game at Lakeport.
Clear Lake, off to a 6-0 start this season, had a 7-0 lead after three innings, including a five-run bottom of the second when all the runs scored after two were out.
“We ran well, took the extra base and forced them into some throwing errors,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “It paid off. We”re a pretty aggressive baserunning team.”
The Cardinals stole four bases in the second. Steven Edwards singled home the first run of the inning, Tanner Mansell and Bryan Edwards followed with RBI singles, and Jess Phillips capped the scoring two a two-run single.
Clear Lake sandwiched single runs in the first and third around its five-run second.
Kelseyville (2-4) chased Clear Lake starter Bryan Edwards from the game in the seventh and scored four times in the inning to close the gap. Edwards worked six-plus innings, allowing four runs, only two of which were earned. He struck out nine and walked two.
Phillips anchored a 15-hit Clear Lake attack by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Jaime Lopez also had three hits and Mansell, Bryan Edwards and Steven Edwards added two hits apiece.
Max Huff went 3-for-4 for Kelseyville and Jarred Wagner went 2-for-3.
Nick Rodrigues started for Kelseyville and took the loss. He struck out seven and walked none in five innings. He also went 1-for-4 with a double.
