LAKEPORT — Liz Sanderson tossed a one-hitter and received plenty of support from her offense and defense as the Clear Lake Cardinals shut out the El Molino Lions 9-0 in non-league softball action Tuesday at Lakeport.
Clear Lake”s defense stayed plenty busy as Sanderson struck out only one.
“Liz pitched a real good game,” Clear Lake coach Gary Pickle said. “She didn”t have a lot of strikeouts, so our defense had to work behind her.”
And it did.
The Cardinals (8-1) didn”t commit an error. Senior third baseman Katie Reynolds had a total of nine putouts and assists to anchor the Cardinals” play in the field.
“She had a great day on defense,” Pickle said. “And she moved people along in sacrifice situations (at the plate).”
Although Reynolds didn”t have a hit, she did knock in a run with a sacrifice fly.
“It was a really well played game by both teams,” Pickle said. “The game lasted only an hour and 23 minutes. We played probably our best all-around game.”
Mari Jordan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cardinals and Heather White and Emily Wingler each went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Rylie Gabehart (1-for-1) scored three times.
Sanderson allowed a clean leadoff single in the top of the second. She also walked two but otherwise shut the Lions down.
Clear Lake returns to action Saturday at home against Justin-Siena. First pitch is 1 p.m.
