LAKE COUNTY ? Clearlake Oaks volunteers and Supervisor Denise Rushing are moving forward with plans to develop Clark”s Island into a sustainable spot, possibly for kayaks to stop.
The group will hold a public meeting from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lake County Board of Supervisors Chambers where Sean Dempsey, of Floating Islands West, will give information on floating islands the group aims to use to remove pollution and create habitats.
The chambers are in the County Courthouse at 255 N. Forbes St. in Lakeport.
Dempsey gave the volunteers a presentation March 18 at the Live Oaks Senior Center on possibilities with floating islands.
Lake County and its Redevelopment Agency bought Clark”s Island in the Clearlake Oaks and moved mobile home residents, removed debris and rezoned it to open space.
Volunteers want to create something environmental with potential aspects of natural earth building, native and American Indian plants, kayak stopping spot, demonstration trail and interpretive signage.
The possible biohaven floating islands would be created to reduce algae and develop a wildlife habitat. Biohavens can remove pollutants from waterways, including nitrates, phosphates, ammonia and heavy metals.
The islands provide riparian edge habitat, mine nutrient loads from the water and reduce algae blooms. The habitats can reduce carbon and other greenhouse gases, provide wave mitigation and erosion control.
