BODEGA BAY — It doesn”t happen often but it did happen on Wednesday. The gusty winds that are so common at Bodega Harbour Golf Links relented during a Coastal Mountain Conference South match involving the Kelseyville Knights, Middletown Mustangs and five other teams.
St. Vincent took advantage of what Kelseyville coach John Berry called a “one-club wind” to win the match with 419 strokes. Kelseyville was next at 442, Middletown had 460, St. Helena was fourth with 476, and Tomales, Rincon Valley Christian and Calistoga were all incomplete (fewer than five golfers).
“It was overcast, mid-50s but the wind was benign,” Berry said.
A long course, Bodega Harbour sets up perfectly for a power team such as St. Vincent, according to Berry. “I”ve had the power team before but now we”re the finesse team. There are courses that play to our strengths. I”m anticipating we”re going to be in a dogfight with them for the rest of the season.”
Kelseyville won the CMC South opener last week at Mount St. Helena Golf Course in Calistoga. There are six matches remaining and of those six venues, half favor Kelseyville and half St. Vincent.
“I”m happy to be in this situation, I thought it was going to be a rebuilding year,” Berry said.
The top two CMC South finishers move on to the sectional playoffs.
Casey Cazet of Rincon Valley Christian fired the low round on the par-70 Bodgea Harbour course, shooting a 2-over-par 72. Vinnie Magliulo of St. Vincent was next with 74 and Blaine Ruggio of Middletown had a 79. Other low rounds went to Middletown”s Lisa Copeland with 82 and to Kelseyville”s Tyler Drake with 83.
Through two weeks of play, Kelseyville and St. Vincent are tied at 11-1 in the standings.
Kelseyville returns to action Monday in the San Leandro Tournament. The next CMC South match is Wednesday at Adobe Creek in Petaluma, the home course of St. Vincent.
