SAN LEANDRO — Playing on a course where they finished second a year ago, the Kelseyville High School golf team placed sixth out of 16 teams Monday during the San Leandro Tournament on the par-71 Tony Lema Golf Course.
“I”m pleased with sixth out of 16 teams considering where we”re at this year,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “It”s going to harden us for the rest of our season.”
Irvington High School of Fremont won the sixth-man tiebreaker with Deer Valley High School of Antioch to capture the team title. Both schools shot 391 in regulation. Castro Valley came in third with 410, Albany and Piedmont each had 427, and Kelseyville was sixth at 435.
Brandon Walker, a senior and first-year player for the Knights, led the way with 82 and veterans Tyler Drake and Wyatt Ferrell were next with 83 and 85, respectively. Peter Wotherspoon carded a 91, Corey Huber had 94 and sixth man J.J. Chittaphong also had 94.
“He”s a first-year player for us, but he”s played a lot,” Berry said of Walker. “He had a good round and so did Wyatt Ferrell.”
Walker had two birdies during his round and Drake, Ferrell and Wotherspoon one apiece.
Low round of the day went to Robert Riel of Deer Valley, who won a tiebreaker with Jonathan Lin of Irvinington after both men fired a 72. Elliot Busichio of Alhambra had 73.
The golfers were greeted by a combination of sunshine and misty rain during their round, according to Berry, who said winds were light.
Kelseyville returns to action Wednesday in a Coastal Mountain Conference South match at Adobe Creek in Petaluma at 1:30 p.m. The Knights are also entered in the Ukiah Tournament on Monday.
