SPRING VALLEY — Special Districts issued an advisory Monday for about 30 homes in Spring Valley to boil tap water or use bottled water for drinking and cooking after a water main broke and lost pressure about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The break affected homes on Madrone, Nectarine, Spring Valley and Riverview roads, deputy administrator Pete Preciado of Special Districts said. The advisory only applies to homes on those streets.

Preciado said Special Districts completed the repairs but must wait for tests to ensure water is safe to drink.

“All tap water used for drinking or cooking should be boiled rapidly for at least one minute. This is the preferred method to assure that the water is safe to drink,” Special Districts reported.

“An alternative method of purification for residents that do not have gas or electricity available is to use fresh liquid household bleach, Clorox, Purex, etc. To do so, add 8 drops, or 1/4 teaspoon, of bleach per gallon of clear water or 16 drops, 1/2 teaspoon, per gallon of cloudy water, mix thoroughly, and allow to stand 30 minutes before using.

“A chlorine-like taste and odor will result from this purification procedure and is an indication that adequate disinfection has taken place.

“Water purification tablets may also be used by following the manufacturers” instructions.

Special Districts will notify residents as soon as the water is safe to drink, Preciado said.
