We”re OK with dropping Saturday mail

Last year when the debate was heating up about the elimination of Saturday mail service by the U.S. Postal Service, we editorialized that it was the right thing to do; that it should be done as soon as possible and that Saturday was the most appropriate day of the week to cancel.

The wheels of government move slowly. The cancelation of Saturday mail service was considered way back in 1977 and again in 1980. Why it has taken so long to finally get to the point of possibly doing it is a mystery. Almost everything associated with the change would be positive. Several years ago a report was released that detailed just the fuel that would be saved and the exhaust emissions eliminated by not having all of the Postal Service trucks on the roads each Saturday. Both numbers were huge.

Most business offices are closed on Saturday and don”t process mail until Monday and most residents only get bills and advertising in the mail. How many people are going to be upset about waiting until Monday for that?

The U.S. Postal Service should be able to realize massive savings by eliminating Saturday mail service without placing too much of an inconvenience on the average citizen. It”s still a go in our book.
