MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Unified School District (MUSD) Board of Trustees renewed a five-year charter for the Lake County International Charter School (LCICS).
Karl Reichman, the school”s director, said the Middletown school board voted unanimously on March 24. Renewal of the charter received unqualified recommendations from district Superintendent Korby Olson and from Sherrie Ebyam, MUSD”s chief business officer.
“Our students and their families, our staff and our charter council are so grateful for the help and support that everyone at MUSD has given us throughout the renewal process. It has been a true example of community teamwork,” Reichman said.
Located at 15872 Armstrong St. in Middletown, LCICS is a tuition-free, K-8 public school that is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World school? (www.ibo.org/pyp/).
LCICS is WASC accredited and its mission is to educate students in grades K-8 to be literate, knowledgeable, principled, local, national and global citizens. “Students participate in an enriched and nurturing learning environment that honors the whole child ? intellectually, emotionally, creatively, physically, socially and culturally. LCICS students become competent and self-motivated individuals with a commitment to life-long learning that enables them to reach their full potentials.”
A vote by the school board on Jan. 19, 2005 to approve the charter petition established LCICS as the first charter school in Lake County. All charter schools must petition their sponsoring district every five years for charter renewal.
According to Reichman, the process of renewal was made much more difficult because of the current economic crisis, felt especially hard in Lake County, the budget cuts and deferrals from the State of California. To be renewed, charter schools must prove that they are financially responsible, viable and have a strong academic program.
