CLEARLAKE — In completing her assignment for an online political science class Catrina Tutor is taking at Yuba College, 50 families were supplied with the fixings for seven days of healthy breakfasts. Tutor”s “Sunrise Bag” project not only satisfied her community service project requirements, but it also helped feed families in need during Spring Break.

Tutor said since she is the only student on the Clear Lake Campus currently enrolled in the online political science course, she was able to choose a community service project on her own. She said in light of Spring Break, she realized that many children may go without the breakfast they normally receive at school.

“Clearlake is an impoverished area with many families in need of the basic necessities to survive. Spring break was coming up through our local school district and I realized many children eat breakfast at school,” Tutor said. “Unfortunately, this is the meal of the day that is most forgotten about and it is the most important meal of the day. So, I decided to put together Sunrise Bags, which contain seven days of breakfast for a family of four to six people.”

Tutor said with assistance she was able to prepare 50 Sunrise Bags. “I contacted our local Health Start programs in the Konocti Unified School District as the source to distribute the Sunrise Bags to local families in need,” she said. “With the help of local businesses, community members and the backing of Yuba College, I was able to produce 50 Sunrise Bags.”

Tutor said her community service project would not have been successful without the support of Foods, Etc., Ray”s Food Place, Clearlake Safeway, Lakeshore Bait & Tackle, Girl Scout troops Nos. 10433, 40459, 10595, 10685 and would like to give thanks for the donations of food or cash.

“We live in a community that is in need and remember it takes one person to make a difference,” Tutor said.
