HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE — The St. Vincent Mustangs threw a monkey wrench into Kelseyville”s plans to win another Coastal Mountain Conference South golf title on Tuesday by edging out the Knights 432-438 at Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course.
“It was disappointing from the Kelseyville perspective because we lost by six shots and that”s a shot per golfer,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “This is one we kind of had to get from them. Now we have to win two in a row. It kind of puts us against the ropes.”
While St. Vincent”s sixth man could do no better than a 105, the Knights were unable to take advantage.
“They were ripe for the picking,” Berry said of Tuesday”s match, which was played in a steady light rain.
St. Vincent received solid play from its top two golfers, with Vinnie Magliulo leading the way with a 3-over-par 75 and Connor Brown just a shot back at 76. Tyler Drake”s 78 paced the Knights but Wyatt Ferrell”s 86 was the next best Kelseyville round followed by Corey Huber”s 89.
Low round of the day belonged to Middletown”s Blaine Ruggio with a 1-over-par 73 on his home course, a round that included four birdies.
“A great round of golf,” Berry said.
Middletown”s Lisa Copeland fired an 85 and Todd Mullin had a 95.
St. Helena, led by Kasey Cazet”s 80, came in third in the team standings with 441 and Middletown was next with 460. Calistoga finished at 644 and Tomales and Rincon Valley were incomplete (fewer than five golfers).
Through four conference matches, St. Vincent has a 23-1 record to Kelseyville”s 21-3. Middletown and St. Helena are tied for third at 14-10.
A scheduled CMC South match Thursday at Adams Springs has been moved to next Tuesday because of wet course conditions.
“They had snow up there yesterday (Monday),” Berry said. “It will give the course five more days to dry out.”
The CMC South golfers also play at Meadowood Golf Course a week from today.
