UKIAH — April is National Poetry Month, and poets from Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties are celebrating the occasion with readings and workshops at a literary festival Saturday at Mendocino College, 1000 Hensley Creek Road.

LitFest 2010 will feature workshops, readings and talks by more than 20 local poets and writers, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission to LitFest and the included workshops is free and the event is open to the public. Food will be available with selections from Taqueria Michoacan between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A schedule of events is available on the LitFest 2010 Website, www.mendocino.edu/litfest2010.

The one-day festival is sponsored by the Mendocino College Foundation and its affiliate organization, Friends of the Mendocino College Library, as well as other various supporters.

In addition to LitFest, several other events will be taking place on campus the same day. They include a College open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a K-12 science fair, a ceramics workshop sponsored by the Mendocino College Ceramics Club and a PowWow. Mendocino area poets Dan Barth, C.E. Chaffin, Mary Norbert Korte, Armand Brint, Theresa Whitehill, Robin Rule, Ethel Mays, and Blake More will be among the artists participating in this year”s festival for word lovers. Additionally, Sandra Wade, poet laureate of Lake County between 2006 and 2008, will share her poetry; and Armando Garcia-Davila, Healdsburg”s literary laureate in 2002-2003, will conduct a workshop entitled “A Writer Shares his Secrets.” Mendocino and Lake laureate poets are also scheduled to read from their works starting at 4 p.m.

“The Mendocino College Literary Festival is a full day dedicated to appreciation of works by very talented artists, the writers and poets from our communities. It is to be enjoyed by students, faculty, staff, and the general public,” said John Koetzner, head librarian at Mendocino College.
