HEALDSBURG — The Kelseyville Knights dug another early hole that they couldn”t climb out of on Thursday, falling 9-3 to the Healdsburg Greyhounds in a non-league varsity baseball game at Recreation Park in Healdsburg.
The Greyhounds scored all of their runs in the first three innings — pushing across three runs in the first, second and third — to open up a commanding 9-1 lead.
“All four of our errors came in the first three innings,” Kelseyville coach Lou Poloni said. “And those four errors were glaring.”
Mike DeGregorio”s solo home run in the top of the second, a towering blast that landed on University Avenue behind the left-center field fence, was all the offense the Knights could muster until Nick Rodrigues doubled home two runs in the fifth.
“We out-hit them (nine to eight), but we”re just not taking care of the ball,” Poloni said. “By the time we woke up we were down 9-1.”
It was almost the exact same story for the Knights in an 11-5 league loss to Middletown on Tuesday in Middletown ? their trailed 10-4 after three innings.
On a more positive note, Poloni said he was impressed with the pitching of starter Dustin Thaxton and reliever Mike Davis, who was playing only his second game of the season.
“Thaxton pitched well, he had some of the best stuff I”ve seen him have since he”s been here,” Poloni said. “Davis looked really good. His velocity was great, even the other coach commented on it.”
DeGregorio, Blake Panos and Jarred Wagner had two hits apiece for the Knights, now 8-7. overall.
DeGregorio”s home run was his third of the year, tying him with Middletown”s Bryan Holt for the county lead.
