KELSEYVILLE — The Quick Steppers Relay for Life team and the Kelseyville Lions will co-host “Cookin” for a Cure” on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kelseyville Lions Club, 4335 Sylar Lane.
The event features an old-fashioned country barbecue, with choice of chicken or tri-tip and side dishes for $10. There will be a no-host bar, no-host dessert bar and raffle prizes. Advance tickets are available at Umpqua Bank in Lakeport and Kelseyville.
The “Quick Steppers” team was named in honor of Ron Quick, a team member who has been fighting cancer since 2006. The team consists of members whose lives have been forever changed by cancer. The roster includes cancer survivors, those who have lost friends and loved ones to the disease, care givers and those who are walking to honor survivors and those fighting the battles of their lives.
Umpqua Bank, with branches in Kelseyville and Lakeport, proudly has 100 percent participation in Relay for Life. Every employee is a member of the Quick Steppers team and has pledged to fight to eliminate cancer.
Cookin” for a Cure offers the community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to assist cancer patients and their families. Donations provide services that include mileage reimbursement for cancer patients. Lake County patients must travel to Ukiah or Santa Rosa for daily radiation treatments in the course of fighting cancer. Often, patients are too fatigued to work and must also bear the costs of traveling for treatment. Mileage reimbursement is often critical to ensure the financial means to receiving life saving therapy.
Money also assists in providing patient lodging, prostheses for breast cancer patients, volunteer visitation programs, assisting patients with documents, and the research critical to improving treatments and discovering cures.
The Quick Steppers would also like to invite the Lake County community to attend Relay for Life on May 15 and 16 at the Kelseyville High School football field. The kick off will be 10 a.m. on Saturday with the Survivors” Lap.
Cancer survivors and those in the midst of their battle proudly don their purple Survivors” shirts and walk the opening lap of Relay. This is the celebrate portion of relay.
During the course of the day there is live entertainment, games and contests are played, and each team camp has something special to see or do.
At dusk, the luminaria ceremony takes place. Luminaria bags dedicated in memory of those taken by cancer and in honor of survivors light up the night. The Quick Steppers team offers those bags for a small donation and they may be obtained at Umpqua Bank, 805 11th Street in Lakeport. Those who wish to, may decorate the luminaria or a team member will gladly do that at your request.
Samples may be seen in the Umpqua lobby. The luminaria ceremony is the remember portion of Relay.
Relay for Life closes at 10 a.m. Sunday morning with the fight back ceremony. Participants, friends and family gather and pledge to continue the fight until there is a cure. Gathered together, it is a powerful experience to see, hear and feel the commitment to fighting the fight. This is the fight back portion of Relay.
