LAKE COUNTY — KPFZ 88.1 FM held a membership drive on Saturday in an effort to sign up 100 new member-listeners. “We need two members for every 10 listeners,” Mike Dunlap, vice president of the board of Lake County Community Radio, said.

The station is in the process of tripling its signal strength from 100 to 300 watts. The total cost of the upgrade is $15,000 according to operations manager Andy Weiss. Of this, listeners and supporters must raise $10,000.

There was a party atmosphere at the radio station on Saturday as volunteers answered phones.

Several programmers were on scene, making appearances in the studio or enjoying hot dogs on the back patio.

Jim Harris, owner of Fast Franks, served hot dogs from his cart, with tips benefiting KPFZ. Dunlap was barbecuing sausages.

The increased signal is expected to improve the station”s reach in Lake County, subject to factors that will include geography and a competition with other signals within the signal”s outer boundaries.

“We”re hoping for a better signal in Hidden Valley Lake, Middletown and Spring Valley,” Dunlap said.

Station memberships are available at a variety of levels. KPFZ encourages volunteers to help in other ways, including programmer, technical, office support and fundraising.

To provide ongoing support as a member of KPFZ, call the general office number at 263-3640.

Pledges can be mailed to KPFZ, P.O. Box 446, Lakeport, CA. 95453. For more information contact Jaclyn Ley at 349-1210.
