LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Board of Supervisors discussed the pros and cons of mechanical harvesting and herbicide application Tuesday with regard to managing aquatic life in Clear Lake. The board decided to proceed with plans for clearing boat lanes in various areas an authorized purchasing of buoys for those areas.

The board directed new Water Resources Director Scott DeLeon to bring back more information pertaining to relocating acquired barges and equipment barges for use in algae abatement activities. The board requested identification of needed equipment for the barges, cost estimate and funding source.

The board, as well as many speaking from the public, agreed that immediate action is needed in order to stay ahead of the algae problem that typically arises with warmer temperatures. Discussion of the topic included advantages and disadvantages of mechanical harvesting and use of aquatic herbicides. Requests for Proposals recently went out with both techniques included in the request. Three responses were received with Clean Lakes coming in as low bidder.

DeLeon was directed to work with Clean Lakes to clear boat lanes and other areas as needed, not to exceed the scope or costs of the proposal. He was also directed to work with the state in identifying a test area to conduct mechanical harvesting and herbicide applications.

It was suggested that Requests for Proposal be re-solicited individually for mechanical harvesting and herbicide application.

Boat lane areas include to and from the shoreline at county parks, selected boat launching ramps, Rodman Slough and at the City of Lakeport”s Library Park. DeLeon was directed to evaluate the possibility of extending boat lanes past the 5 mph markers they typically extend to.

DeLeon also received authorization to have necessary repairs done on the algae abatement boat that was purchased last year from Kelseyville Fire District.
