CLEARLAKE OAKS — The 27th annual Clearlake Oaks/Glenhaven Catfish Derby drew a record number of participants when 633 (518 adults and 115 children) showed up to compete in the three-day event. The winner in the adult division was Gary Moore of Clearlake who reeled in a 24.55-pound catfish and took home the grand prize which was a new Gregor aluminum boat, trailer and 15 hp Yamaha outboard. Moore said that he caught his winning catfish in Cache Creek near the dam using shrimp for bait. The winner in the kid”s division was 13-year-old Christopher Lombardo of Sacramento with a 14.61-pound catfish. He won a Nintendo Wii System.

The derby ran from noon on Friday until noon on Sunday and a total of 124 catfish were weighed in. According to derby official Dennis Locke, 60 percent of the contestants came from out of the county. Fishermen came from Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico and throughout California. Locke said that proceeds from the derby are used to fund local projects.

“All proceeds from the derby are sent back into our community. Our business association supports through donations to local schools, parks, senior and youth services, non-profit organizations and a graduating senior scholarship program. We also fund the annual Clearlake Oaks 4th of July fireworks display.” Locke said.
