KELSEYVILLE — Kelseyville High School senior Adrian Lopez has won the First Congressional District”s 2010 art competition. “This was his second year and it paid off,” Lopez”s mother, Evilin Lopez, said.
Lopez”s artwork, in colored pencil, depicts his 10-month-old cousin Estella. The artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, according to Lindsay Righter in the Eureka district office of U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson.
Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nation-wide high school arts competition. One overall winner from each participating district is displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.
“Every year I look forward to seeing the creative and unique pieces of artwork submitted by our district”s youth,” Thompson said in an earlier statement.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 and since then more than 650,000 students have participated.
Evilin Lopez said that Adrian has been accepted to the Art Academy of San Francisco. She credited KHS art teacher Debbie Ingalls with assisting Adrian to reach where he is today.
Adrian and the other winners of the congressional art contest will be honored at a national reception in Washington, D.C.
