CLEARLAKE — Clearlake City Councilman Roy Simons presented his first proclamation on May 13 designating May 17 through 21 as National Neuropathy Week in Clearlake. The proclamation was accepted by Barbara Dryden and Carole Gordon, co-leaders of the Neuropathy Association”s Clearlake Support Group.
The proclamation read into record reads as follows:
“WHEREAS, Peripheral Neuropathy is one of the most common diseases in the United States, effecting upwards of 20 million Americans. It is a disorder resulting from injury to the peripheral nerves ? the motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves connecting the spinal column to muscles, skin, and internal organs. It usually affects the feet and/or hands, causing weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain. It can either progress slowly over many years, or it can become severe and debilitating; and
“WHEREAS, six years ago, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognized Peripheral Neuropathy as a disease on its own; and
“WHEREAS, the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and other institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) conduct research related to peripheral neuropathies in laboratories at the NIH and also support additional research through grants to major medical institutions across the country; and
“WHEREAS, this is the sixth year that the U.S. Office of Disease and Prevention and Health Promotion has dedicated the third week of May to this illness on the federal government”s Calendar of National Health Observances; and
“WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize the many physicians who demonstrate an untiring effort to treat and search for a cure for this mostly unknown disease.
“NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Clearlake does hereby proclaim May 17 ? 21 as ?National Neuropathy Week” in Clearlake.”
