LAKEPORT — A Lakeport man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges including attempted murder.
Daniel Beaty, 35, allegedly shot Glenn Jenkins, 35, of Willits multiple times May 3 at a home in Lucerne.
Beaty is charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm, burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, threats to commit a crime resulting in death and obstructing or resisting a public officer.
Doug Rhoades confirmed his representation as a public defender for Beaty, though he said that might change because of a conflict with another man involved in the case, James McClean.
The Sheriff”s Major Crimes Unit investigation revealed that Beaty, McClean, 23, and Christopher Secord, 21, all of Lakeport allegedly went to the Third Avenue home in Lucerne early May 3 looking for Jenkins, Capt. Jim Bauman of the Lake County Sheriff”s Office said. Both Beaty and Secord were allegedly armed with handguns. After Jenkins had been shot, Secord reportedly fled the area on foot and ditched his gun several blocks away before leaving the area. Beaty and McClean reportedly drove straight to the home of Alan Wayne Monroe, 57, in Lucerne after the shooting, ditched the gun Beaty had in a nearby creek, and talked Monroe into driving them out of the area to avoid capture.?
Detectives also arrested McClean, Secord and Monroe on May 5, but senior deputy district attorney Rich Hinchcliff said he hasn”t made a charging decision in their cases.
Rhoades asked for some time to discuss the case with his client.
Beaty will return to court 9 a.m. June 18 for setting and disposition. He waived time in a few misdemeanor cases. Attorneys said they expect the preliminary hearing to take three to four hours.
On May 21, Judge Richard Martin denied Beaty”s request for bail and kept him on a no-bail hold at the Lake County Jail because he said Beaty allegedly shot Jenkins multiple times, has a lengthy rap sheet, could serve life in prison and performed poorly on parole in the past.
