LAKE COUNTY — Polls will open 7 a.m. today for the statewide primary election and will continue to take votes until 8 p.m.
Up for grabs are seats for sheriff-coroner, district attorney, county superintendent of schools and Districts 2 and 3 supervisors.
Incumbent Sheriff Rod Mitchell faces challengers Jack Baxter and Francisco Rivero.
District Attorney Jon Hopkins also has two competitors, Don Anderson and Doug Rhoades.
Wally Holbrook and Judy Luchsinger are running for county superintendent of schools. The current superintendent, Dave Geck, isn”t running again for the office.
Incumbent Supervisor Jeff Smith and Joyce Overton are vying for District 2 supervisor.
Supervisor Denise Rushing also has challengers for District 3 supervisor, Robert Hesterberg and Gary Lewis.
A number of county positions aren”t contended. On the ballot are Assessor-Recorder Douglas Wacker, County Clerk-Auditor Pam Cochrane and Treasurer-Tax Collector Sandra Kacharos.
In the statewide primary, Californians will vote for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, state treasurer, attorney general, insurance commissioner, state board of equalization first district, state superintendent of public instruction and United States senator. Voters registered in Lake County can also vote for U.S. representative for the first district, state senator for the second district and assembly for the first district.
There are five propositions on the ballot.
Decline-to-state voters can request a ballot in either the Democratic or Republican party primaries in order to allow them to vote for each seat.
