I just read Mr. Grant”s column about Sarah Palin and I get the impression that he can”t quite understand why she is so popular. Allow me to help. Sarah is so popular for one reason, the single-most important reason for any politician, of either party ? her views on all the big issues are in line with those of a broad majority of voters. She is against socialized medicine, against abortion, against bailouts and against trillion-dollar deficits. She is for less government, lower taxes, a strong defense and a reality-based energy policy.

For all that, liberals hate her. But millions of people, voters, love her, precisely because of her mainstream conservative views. So, liberals can bash Sarah Palin all they want, but if she is not the next president then some other strong conservative will be. Whether it is Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Chris Christie, Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty, Mitch Daniels, Rick Perry, Tom Coburn, Paul Ryan, Jan Brewer or someone else, the Republican bench is very, very deep, so just calling Sarah Palin names is not going to cut it for the liberal side. Sooner or later they are going to have to debate the issues and ? ahem ? face the voters.
