LAKEPORT — The temperature soared and so did the racing excitement Sunday at Delberts Memorial Raceway in Lakeport.
The Outlaw Karts had to contend with the competition as well as Mother Nature as the mercury climbed above 100 degrees. The track crew stayed plenty busy watering down the dirt track and keeping it clear of rocks.
Liam Hawkins set the fast time and also won his first trophy dash in the beginner box division. He went on to finish third in the main event.
In the up-for-grabs box stock division, Carlee Austin won the main event, beating out the likes of Michael Kofoid, Ren Eberhart and Colby Furia after some intense wheel-to-wheel action.
The 250 main event was raining yellow flags and restarts, which produced several lead changes. Marcus Johnson prevailed in the end. Riley Matson picked up a win in the trophy dash and he added another trophy dash victory in the 500 division. Matson has been a strong competitor in both the 250 and 500 classes this season.
In the 500 main event, Rico Abreu grabbed the early lead and was able to maintain it the rest of the race.
While the Outlaw Karts are off for the Fourth of July weekend, they return to action July 11 when they pay tribute to the early days of sprint car racing with their annual wingless race.
