LAKEPORT — The Outlaw Karts paid tribute to the early days of racing with a non-wing racing show Sunday at Delbert”s Memorial Raceway in Lakeport.
The open-wheel, open-cockpit karts are similar in appearance to the cars raced by the likes of Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon on both dirt and pavement early in their racing careers. The Lakeport drivers took advantage by flying around the track on a red-hot afternoon that took its toll on car and driver alike.
One of the most spectacular flip-and-rolls of the season took place in the 250 division heat race where Jeremy Doss got tangled up in turn one, struck a hay bale protecting the infield and flipped multiple times before coming to rest on his side. He walked away from the crash and was back in action by the main event, which was hotly contested by 16 karts. There were several yellow flags and restarts before Jesse Caldwell took the checkered for the win.
In the box stock main event, Michael Kofoid hit the wall and flipped his kart. After being checked out by track staff, he was allowed to continue and ended up taking third behind winner Ren Eberhart and runner-up Colby Furia.
The final race of the day took place in the 500-open class as the temperature neared 100 degrees. Midway through the race the action was halted so that the drivers, dehydrating quickly in the hot conditions, could get water and refuel their karts. Missy Polizzi took home the victory to extend her winning streak.
