LAKEPORT — Raymundo Catalan, 32, of North Hollywood appeared in Lake County Superior Court Monday where he pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a Jan. 4 shooting of a Lakeport man. Catalan is alleged to have shot Marshall Wisterman, 35, at close range.
Catalan pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted murder, torture, aggravated mayhem, mayhem and assault with a firearm. He also denies a number of special allegations that accompany the charges including that he intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury, that he used a firearm and that he inflicted great bodily injury.
Catalan also requested a Marsden Hearing, which requests that his counsel be relieved.
Catalan has a prior strike and prison record. He faces about 36 years to life in prison.
Jury trial has been set for 8:15 a.m. Aug. 31 in Department 2. Additionally, an Omnibus Motion Hearing has been set for 8:15 a.m. Aug. 9 in Department 2. Trial readiness and settlement conference has been set for 8:15 a.m. Aug. 18 in Department 1 and trial assignment has been set for 8:15 a.m. Aug. 27 in Department 2.
Lake County Sheriff Deputy Gavin Wells testified during Catalan”s preliminary hearing that when he spoke with Wisterman before paramedics arrived at the shooting, Wisterman told him that “Raymond” had shot him over $50 he owed him.
