UPPER LAKE — A residential structure fire took place Thursday night at 9350 Government St., apartments 10 and 11, in Upper Lake.
“Something exploded inside there, and all of a sudden, it just lit.” Chris Miller, Upper Lake resident, said about the burning duplex.
Miller said he heard the explosion around 6:15 p.m. Northshore Fire Department responded to the fire quickly thereafter.
“Sounded like guns going off.” Katie Rogers, Upper Lake resident, said.
Rogers also said she saw, “A lot of black smoke and flames shooting into the sky,” after hearing the explosion. The residential structure fire got into the attic of one of the apartments, Northshore Battalion Chief Steve Hart said, but because the duplex wasn”t separated by fire breaks in the attic, both apartments caught on fire.
How and where the fire started was still under investigation by press time.
Northshore responded to the fire with six engines, two battalion chief officers, and one water tender.
CALFire assisted in extinguishing the fire with two engines and one battalion chief.
Thirty firefighters in total responded to the fire at 9350 Government Street. The fire was extinguished before it could spread to nearby living units.
