LAKEPORT — Marc Spillman said he”s not mad about anything and isn”t looking for a huge amount of change, he just thinks he would be a good Lakeport city councilman.

Spillman, 47, is running for one of two positions on the City Council up for votes in the Nov. 2 election. Mayor James Irwin said he”s seeking re-election but Councilman Ron Bertsch said he would not.

“I”m grounded in the city and the city government,” Spillman said.

He said because he has attended almost every city council meeting in the past three years and has worked with city staff, he thinks he would do well as a councilman.

He grew up mainly in Santa Rosa and moved to Lakeport 13 years ago. He has two sons who graduated from Clear Lake High School.

Spillman worked for Piedmont”s truss plant for 19 years until it closed and got a job in March working for Kelseyville Lumber”s truss plant. His wife worked for Piedmont Lumber in the nursery up until this week when the store closed.

“I like living in Lakeport,” Spillman said. “It”s nice when you can live in a town where you want to retire.”

Spillman is finishing his four-year term as a Lakeport Planning Commissioner. He was the chairman of the Lakeport General Plan Advisory Committee and was a member of the Measure I Committee last year.

He is in the Lakeport Early Lake Lions, finishing his third year as treasurer.

Spillman ran for the office two years ago but lost.

“I would like to thank the voters from two years ago,” Spillman said.?”I ran very close in votes to Councilman Parmentier, who holds a great deal of support in Lakeport. I appreciate the voters” efforts and time.”?

Spillman thinks the City Council needs to officially prioritize spending for Measure I funding the way voters passed it for road repairs, parks and pools and programs added to the city, he said.

“It”s tough if people feel like the city misspends the money,” Spillman said. “If they do, they”ll never vote for a tax again.”

“I tend to be fiscally conservative with other people”s money,” Spillman said. “I”m not quite as fiscally conservative as Irwin but I admire he sticks to his guns.”

Spillman said he supports the downtown improvement plan.

“People drive through a town and say, ?Gosh, what a nice looking town. I think I would like to come back here,”” he said. “The lake and downtown is what”s going to bring people back to Lakeport.”

People can reach Spillman at mcslpcc@yahoo.com. He said he”s running for office because he thinks he would be a reasonable councilman.

“Karan Mackey said, ?You kinda get the bug.”” Spillman said. “It”s definitely not for money or fame.”
