LAKEPORT — Ramps on and off Highway 29 through Lakeport will not all be closed at the same time for repaving.
Crews will continue work to repave the ramps at Lakeport Boulevard, 11th Street, Park Way and Nice-Lucerne Cutoff through Aug. 13, during which only one onramp and off-ramp should be closed at a time, said Phil Frisbie Jr., public information officer for Caltrans in Lake County. Signs should be posted before closed off-ramps to give exiting drivers a chance to take the exit before or after the construction.
Caltrans started intermittently closing the ramps July 26. Work hours are from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The construction might cause delays.
Crews are using rubberized asphalt from recycled tires to repave the road, Frisbie said.
“There aren”t a lot of ways here in the U.S. to legally recycle tires,” he said. “Rubberized asphalt is one of the significant ways of recycling tires. It”s shown to be more flexible than asphalt so it tends to last longer.”
The project is Caltrans” major construction happening now on Highway 29, Frisbie said.
Money was allocated to repave the highway after officials noticed a lot of gravel was coming off the road, which happens as the top layer of asphalt wears off. Crews regularly clean up the gravel, but this year, gravel levels were excessive so funds were allocated for emergency paving, Frisbie said.
Drivers trying to get to Sutter Lakeside Hospital can take either the Hill Road or Nice-Lucerne Cutoff to reach the hospital.
